Medical Eye Exams

At our office, every comprehensive eye examination is medically based and your ocular health is assessed. However, we know that some patients require specialized and more frequent care for chronic health conditions such as diabetes, dry eye, glaucoma, macular degeneration, keratoconus, etc.  Our office is fully equipped and our eye doctors are fully trained to practice full scope optometry including medical eye examinations and health management of chronic conditions.  Visit our Advanced Diagnostics Page to read more about our technology and continue reading for a short list of some of the medical conditions we can manage for our patients.

  • Diabetes

diabetic retinopathy

Diabetes is a chronic condition where patient's ability to regulate blood sugar is impaired.  Diabetes can cause several complications within the eye so all patients with diabetes must have regular eye examinations to evaluate their retinal health.  At minimum, these examinations must occur annually but some patients may be at higher risk and require more frequent evaluation. Complications can include but are not limited to fluctuating vision, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, cataract, glaucoma, and retinal detachment. Our eye doctors are trained in diabetic eye care and follow up-to-date guidelines for diabetic care and referral if necessary.  Additionally, our office is equipped with state-of-the-art technology to make your examination and care as convenient as possible.

  • Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a progressive disorder of the optic nerve that may or may not be accompanied by increased pressure in the eye.  Glaucoma causes blindness if not managed appropriately and often has no symptoms until vision has already been lost. Therefore, it is important that glaucoma be identified and diagnosed early and treatment began in order to reduce the risk of permanent vision loss.  Our eye doctors are  trained to identify glaucoma and provide treatment and follow-up care to all patients.  They are comfortable with your care and highly competent to medically manage a glaucoma diagnosis.

If you already have a glaucoma diagnosis or are at risk due to a family history, trauma to your head or eye, or have had elevated eye pressure in the past, schedule an appointment with one of our eye doctors today!

  • Dry Eye

Dry eye is the most common medical eye condition.  Many people have dry eye without realizing it. Symptoms such as redness, sandy or gritty feeling, watering eyes, blurry vision, increased sensitivity, tired eyes, eye strain, and decreased contact lens wear time are all indicators of dry eyes.  While our eye doctors will assess every patient for dry eye at every appointment, some patients with conditions such as autoimmune diseases (i.e. RA, lupus, Sjogrens), certain medical conditions (i.e. diabetes, hypothyroidism, heart disease), or who use certain medications (i.e. diuretics) are more likely to suffer from dry eye and require more intensive dry eye therapy.  Our eye doctors know how uncomfortable and destructive dry eye can be for your vision and life style and are ready to develop the best treatment option for your needs. Schedule an appointment today.

  • Corneal Disorders

Keratoconus

Corneal disorders or disorders of the front of the eye are fairly common and can be visually devastating.  Diseases and disorders such as keratoconus, corneal dystrophies, post-surgical corneal ectasias, scarring, shingles, and other "red eyes" can all be treated by our eye doctors.  Some conditions are easily managed with medication while other conditions require more specialized visual aids such as specialty contacts or referral for surgical intervention.

Our eye doctors are happy to discuss treatment options that are specific to your disorder in order to enhance your vision, make you comfortable, and relieve symptoms when possible. Make an appointment with our eye doctors today to discuss your options.

  • Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is a progressive, destruction of the macula or the part of the eye responsible for central 20/20 vision.  Macular degeneration symptoms range from blurry vision to complete loss of central vision seen as a central blind-spot.  Risk factors for macular degeneration include having a direct family member with the disorder, smoking, age, high blood pressure, chronic inflammation, and nutritional deficiencies.  Early detection and monitoring is especially important for maintaining the best vision possible. Treatment options require strict monitoring for progression from early (dry) disease to more severe cases (wet) diseases.  Our office utilizes equipment that can detect macular degeneration earlier.  This gives our eye doctors the ability to begin treatment or referral earlier and provide better outcomes for our patients. Make an appointment with one of our eye doctors today if you have been diagnosed with macular degeneration or feel that you are at risk.
